Aftercare

A good tattoo needs a good heal. Follow these steps for the next two to four weeks.

Your artist may give you instructions for your specific tattoo or wrap. If they do, follow theirs first.

The first day

  1. Leave the wrap on for as long as your artist told you to.
  2. Wash your hands, then gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
  3. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Don't rub.
  4. Let it air dry for a few minutes, then apply a very thin layer of the aftercare product your artist recommended.

The next few weeks

  • Wash it two or three times a day and keep it lightly moisturized. Less is more.
  • Expect some redness, flaking and itching. That's normal healing.
  • Don't pick, scratch or peel. Let flakes fall off on their own.
  • Wear loose, clean clothing over it.

Avoid until it's healed

  • Soaking it: no baths, pools, hot tubs or lakes.
  • Direct sun and tanning beds.
  • Tight clothing rubbing on the area.

Long term

Once it's healed, sunscreen is the best thing you can do to keep your tattoo bright.
